HCKC / Getting started

Bring your own kart

This is a member-owned race club between Austin and San Antonio. Come watch a Saturday, then enter on Alpha Timing.

  1. 01

Bring a kart, or come watch first

Spend a race day in the pits before you buy anything. Spectator admission is $10. Racers bring their own karts. Never touch a kart without permission. The exhaust pipe and the engine can cause serious burns.

  2. 02

    Pick a class

Kid Kart starts at attained age 5. From there the club runs LO206, Rotax MAX, KA100, brackets, and the classes listed on the classes page.

  3. 03

    Read the rulebook

NKA is the sanction. The HCKC rulebook is the local supplement: weights, fuel, tires, pit rules, and how a race day is scored.

  4. 04

Join the club, or enter as a guest

Buy a membership on Alpha Timing, or enter one event as a daily guest. Members get the practice gate code.

  5. 05

    Register on Alpha Timing

Club race days are posted on the schedule. Register before noon the day prior.

Questions

Do you rent karts?

No. Hill Country Kart Club is owner-driver racing. Racers bring their own karts. The club does not run a rental or arrive-and-drive fleet.

How young can a driver start?

Kid Kart is attained age 5 through 8. A driver must have had their 5th birthday before taking the track. NKA does not allow an age waiver to move out of Kid Kart. Cadet LO206 starts at attained age 7. Rotax ages are the age the driver reaches during the calendar year, per the 2025 Global Rotax Max Challenge regulations: Micro MAX 8–11 (ages 7+ allowed at HCKC with a waiver), Mini MAX 10–13, Junior MAX 12–14 (15 only with a special CIK licence), Senior MAX 15+ (14 with a grade F international licence), and Masters 32+. The club rulebook governs local weights and eligibility.

How do I register for a race?

Entries go through Alpha Timing. Early registration closes at noon the day before the event. After that, the 2026 rulebook adds a $15 late fee. One pit pass is included with the first driver entry.

What does a race day cost?

From the August 15, 2026 rulebook: members pay $52 for the first kart in a family and $45 for each additional kart. Non-members pay $77 and $65. Spec classes add $5 for post-race tech. A transponder rental is $10, with an ID held as the deposit. Four dollars from each entry fee goes to the annual awards fund. Spectator admission is $10, with pit access. Buy spectator tickets in advance and e-sign the waiver, or scan the QR code at the track. The club has no separate grandstand-only ticket. Anyone on the property needs an insurance wristband.

When can members practice?

The rulebook says practice starts no earlier than 9:00 a.m., or 8:00 a.m. for Kid Karts, and ends at 8:00 p.m. Race days can run later. Kid Karts never practice with other classes. A member needs at least one other person present. The gate code goes to members in good standing. The track is not staffed except during events.

When should I arrive on race day?

The club asks racers to arrive 2–3 hours before the start. A practice order based on class entries is posted at 9:00 a.m. on the Alpha Timing notice. TODO(john): publish a typical green-flag time. It is not in the rulebook.

Where do I buy a used kart?

The club does not sell karts. Ask in Discord, and talk to the shops on the vendors page. Please check the “Approved Vendor” channel on Discord. Ask in our Discord before trusting Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

Can I touch a kart in the pits?

Never touch a kart without permission. The exhaust pipe and the engine can cause serious burns.

What does a pit stall reservation cover?

The agreement names are Pit Space, Trailer Storage, Garage, and Storage bays. Choose one: a pit space, a garage, or storage. A pit space is the race-day reservation. A trailer left on site stays at the member's risk. No security is provided, and HCKC assumes no liability. On a race weekend it has to be moved if the member is not attending. Current fees are shown in Alpha at reservation. Regional events such as Kartoberfest are excluded.

What license or membership do I need?

Racing is sanctioned by the National Karting Alliance, with the HCKC rulebook on top. Membership is sold on Alpha Timing and is separate from a single-race entry. Family, honorary, and daily-guest memberships are defined in the bylaws. Daily guests can enter an event without a full membership, at the non-member entry fee.
