Hill Country Kart Club. Clearing of land and track construction begins. Club holds TKC race in Victoria.
1988 New track completed. First race held.
Although its present track opened in 1988, the Hill Country Kart Club's roots can be traced back to the early days of karting in the late 1950's. When I entered my first kart race as a junior in 1961, the club was then operating under its original name, San Antonio Kart Club. The club was temporarily holding races at the Kart Park Raceway, on the corner of what is now Rittiman Road and I35. Kart Park Raceway was owned by C. H. January and was operated by him as a concession track on non-race days.
In 1962 the San Antonio Kart Club was incorporated and moved to its own track, San Antonio Kartway, on S. W. Military Drive. Racing continued there through 1963, when the club decided to forego expensive track repair in favor of moving to another track, the Country Road Kart Track, on O'Connor Road.
Today, it's hard to believe that when the club moved in 1964, O'Connor Road was a gravel road out in the country, hence the track's name. The club struck a deal with track owners, Jennings and Bruce Carlisle, to "rent" their concession track for races and offer a discount to members for use of track for practice. This arrangement worked very well until the Carlisle's shut their concession operation down and turned management of the track over to the club.
For the balance of the 1960's, throughout the 1970's and into the 1980's, the club pressed on. Although the original karting boom had long since passed, club membership and local race participation enjoyed ongoing periods of growth and decline. In 1971, the entire track was widened and resurfaced. The track had originally been built in 1960, and although the Carlisle's maintained that they knew nothing about track design, it seemed to have something for everyone. The high-speed 180 degree sweeper at the end of the straight was exciting, if not always safe. There was one naturally banked corner and an interesting corner coming on to the straight that included a rather large tree near its apex.
Even today, karters from all over the state that raced at O'Connor Road still claim it as one of their all-time favorite tracks.
It was also during this time that he club's activities extended well past just holding a local race program. By the mid-1960's, interest in enduro, or road, racing began to overshadow sprint racing in Texas. Following this trend, the club held a series of these events around the area for several years. Races were held at abandoned air airfields, including Zuehl, Clear Springs, San Marcos and Hondo. Another series was held at the old Austin Raceway Park.
Each year the club hosted at least one IKF regional sprint race at the track and even ventured off to put one on at the old Capital City Kartway, which was located near Round Rock. In 1972, the San Antonio Kart Club became a charter member of the Texas Karting Council, a group of Texas clubs originally organized to promote the recognition of sprint state champions through a series of IKF regional races each year. Members also participated in special events, such as the Fort Sam Houston hobby show, exhibition races at Pan American Speedway and, later, the Austin Aqua Festival.
By 1985, however, a lot had changed on O'Connor Road. The dusty gravel road from 20 years earlier had given way to a four-lane thoroughfare. Housing developments had sprung up throughout the area, and some houses had back yards adjacent to the track. One homeowner, disgruntled with the noise and determined to see the track go away, uncovered an oversight in the zoning of the track property. During annexation by the city of San Antonio in 1972, the property was zoned "residential" without the Carlisle's knowledge. Although he fought on his own to have the property "grand fathered," an obscure law dictated that Bruce Carlisle would have had only one year following annexation to register his "non-conforming" rights.
The San Antonio Zoning Board tried to be as generous as it could to the club and gave us 18 months to shut down and move. However, the homeowner was not satisfied with the outcome and filed suit with the city to have us leave immediately. Fortunately, her case never went to trial. A hearing was held, and the club was awarded use on a reduced schedule until the trial. What is not generally known is that racing could have continued after the original 18-month period, since the trial had not taken place. But, it did appear that the days on O'Connor Road were coming to an end, and it was time to move on.
As 1986 drew to a close, the club found itself totally unprepared to deal with its future. It had to find property and raise enough money to build a new track. Most of the membership could not fathom this ever happening and had long since dropped out of the club. What few members were left looked for opportunities, but became very frustrated with the process. Several possibilities came up, only to be later dropped for any number of reasons.
It was right in the middle of this low point in the club's history that a relatively new member, Randy Taylor, approached the club with a vision and a plan. As a contractor in New Braunfels, he understood what it would take to build a track and had many contacts to help us. He located the land, arranged meetings with the city council, got much of the materials donated, but, more importantly, energized the club members. Lifetime memberships were sold, loans arranged, pit spaces sold and endless work parties were held to defray labor costs.
A committee was formed to design the facility, and they spent countless hours studying what they liked and did not like about tracks they had seen around the country. The track design itself was based on an article that had appeared many years before on how to increase the number of available passing areas through the use of "hy-comp" corners. The plan was laid out on a parking lot and tested before the design was finalized. The track plan was drafted by lifetime member Jim Gray, who also headed up a crew of members to plot it out on the property once it had been cleared.
As construction continued, expenses kept mounting. Just prior to completion, long-time member Steve Tunnell came through with a short-term loan to finish the fencing and handle other expenses. In February, 1988, the newly named Hill Country Kart Club held its first race at our current track.
While much can also be written about the club since its move to New Braunfels, I thought that by sharing some of its earlier history current members would have a better understanding of the value of this club. I think that there can be no doubt that those of us who enjoy the club and its facilities today owe a debt of gratitude to a great many previous members who took the initiative and responsibility to sustain the club for nearly 40 years.
Bracket Racing Explained

From Rule VII. Time Trials
"C. TIME RESTRICTIONS FOR BRACKET CLASSES: (Bracket Racing Explained)Upon completion of qualifying, scoring officials will group entrants into “brackets” of similar times, ideally the groupings should be within 1.5 seconds (or less) of each other but the range may be expanded based on a number of factors, including number of entries, rain delays, or other factors. The fastest time for a particular bracket establishes the “base” time for that class. If during the race heats, a driver is going .5 seconds faster than the base time for that class, he is running too fast for that class and will “break out,” will be black flagged immediately and will be moved up to the next faster class for the remaining heats. He will forfeit his points for the bracket he was “bumped” from but will be scored in last place in the previous heat(s) for the bracket he/she bumps up to. He/she will start at the rear of the bracket to which bumped up to and will continue to compete in that bracket for the duration of the event, as long as there are no further breakouts. He/she will not be allowed to run the same heat in the bracket that he was bumped up into as the heat that he broke out of. This restriction is designed to eliminate “sandbagging” on time trials and applies to all brackets. Senior 1 and Junior 1 brackets have the same breakout rules. In the eventcompetitor(s) record a lap or laps .5 second faster than the basetime, they will be moved up to a new bracket (1A) and will compete in that new bracket for the remaining heats. It is possible, but unlikely, to be moved up two or three times if there are enough classes and a driver started in the slowest class. Once again, a driver may volunteer to run in a faster class, but he may not reverse his decision."
End of Rule
----
Bracket racing was designed to allow anyone with a race legal kart and engine to compete in a comfortable setting; they are grouped with other racers driving nearly the same lap-times regardless of equipment or skill. This allows the system to be fair for drivers of all skill types, and helps to prevent a class where one or two karts are up front, and another few are about to be lapped for example. Each bracket receives equal points; you do not get more points for competing in a higher bracket. For example someone who qualifies and races in the 4th bracket would still be eligible to win the year end points; they would not be penalized in any way. This differs from a spec class where all karts run in the same heat, regardless of skill or equipment.
As a driver improves in skill they may find themselves qualifying better and therefore running in a faster bracket, additionally, someone may find that they go faster than the base time during a race for that bracket and will be bumped to the next bracket. You can also bump out of the highest bracket and you would then run by yourself in Senior/Master 1a unless more than one kart breaks out.The breakout rule was designed to prevent drivers from sandbagging just to win in a lower bracket.
A racer may request to be placed in a higher bracket, normally this is done when a mistake was made during time trials, or equipment problems existed.Sometimes racers just want to try and follow faster karts as well to learn the racing line, etc. This decision may not be reversed for the duration of the race weekend, if you find yourself being lapped for example.
Please see the Race Director or another Board Member if you have any questions about Bracket Racing.
Kart Classes

This page is under construction, not all information has been inputted.
Hill Country Kart Club's classes range from the age of 5 and up, with varying classes that offer great racing while allowing you a comfortable experience as your skill level increases. Below is a list of the class types raced, the age range, recommended gearing, and other basic info to help you decide all that karting has to offer. From Touch-and-Go (TaG) classes, 80cc/125cc Shifter, to low-cost 4-strokes.
Our bracket racing system used for the Jr 8-11, Jr 12-15, and Senior Bracket is better explained here.
Kid Karts - Attained age of 5 through competition age of 8.
This is the youngest class, with the Comer 50cc 2-stroke engine and kid kart chassis young racers get their start here. Low-horsepower around 1.8hp
Gearing:
Cadet Kart Classes
Yamaha Jr I - competition age 8 through 11.
Yamaha KT-100 100cc 2-stroke engine
Gearing: 10-tooth clutch driver / 91-tooth rear sprocket
TaG Junior Rookie - competition age 8 through 12.
Parilla Gazelle 60cc electric start engine
Gearing: 10-tooth driver | Rear sprocket 92/89-tooth (92 is good for new racers to start out with)
Tire Pressure: MG Yellow - around 20psi in normal conditions (as low as 14psi in hot summer conditions, up to 28psi in cold weather) | Bridgestone - no data
Junior Brackets 8-11 - competition age 8 through 11 (local option class).
In this bracket class you can run any legal IKF engine package for this age group, and the karts will be placed into groupings based on qualifying times. Our bracket classes offer great racing as the racers will be separated into 1.5 seconds or less groupings, these groups will then race as if they were their own class. Bracket 1 will not intermix with Bracket 2 racers for example, unless you go .5 seconds quicker than the pole time for that grouping. If you breakout, you lose points for that heat and start scratch in the faster bracket. Brackets are good for rookie drivers just learning the sport, or experienced racers alike.
In this class you can run engines like one of the Briggs 4-strokes, or a Rotax Mini-Max. While this is not a spec class like the classes listed above, for the Juniors they must be IKF legal engines and will be subject to tech based on those specs.
---
Classes that run a full size chassis
Junior Classes
Yamaha Jr SS - competition age 12 through 15.
Yamaha KT-100 100cc 2-stroke, the same engine used in the Jr 1 class; however, this class runs without a restrictor and larger RLV SSX Super Box Muffler - making this class a natural stepping stone from the Jr 1 class with increased power from the engine and higher speeds.
Gearing:
TaG Junior - competition age 13 through 15.
1. Parilla Leopard 125cc Jr. 2 – restricted per manufacturers specs. Must use 15mm IAME intake restrictor and 25mm exhaust restrictor / 315 lbs.
2. Parilla Leopard 125cc Jr. 3 – restricted with 25mm exhaust restrictor / 320 lbs.
3. Rotax FR125 Jr. Max – per manufacturers specs / 330 lbs.
Gearing:
Chonda Jr II - competition age 12 through 15 (local option class).
A great class for new racers in this age category, using a clone Honda engine that offers a great entry price even with a new engine package. Low maintenance, lower speeds compared to the TaG Junior class, while still promoting close racing and a good platform for learning chassis tuning.
Gearing: 13-tooth driver | 57 to 60-tooth rear sprocket on the Purple restrictor
Jet: 38 to 40 main jet
Junior Brackets 12-15 - competition age 12 through 15 (local option class).
Just like the 8-11 bracket, this class can run all 2 and 4-cycle IKF approved engines or engine package (engine, intake silencer, clutch, exhaust system, etc. and weight for their age group.
Formula 80cc Jr - competition age 12 through 15.
Honda 80cc Shifter
Gearing:
Adult Classes
80cc Shifter - competition age 16 and up.
Gearing:
125cc Stock Moto - competition age 16 and up.
Gearing:
125cc Mod Shifter - competition age 16 and up.
Gearing:
Spec TaG Senior - competition age 16 and up.
Spec TaG Master - 35 and up.
Gearing: 10-tooth driver | 89/93-tooth rear sprocket depending on engine package
Chonda - competition age 16 and up (local option class).
Gearing: 13-tooth driver / 59-tooth rear sprocket
Bracket Classes - Local Option Class
Senior Bracket - competition age 16 and up.
TaG powered karts - Gearing: 10-tooth driver | 89/93-tooth rear sprocket depending on engine package
